About the Event
I'm really excited to mentor homeschool students ages 8-13 who are interested in nature, science, or the environment to work with a small group on real research.Â
I'm looking for 3-4 students to participate in scientific research on hemlock trees. This is a citizen science project in conjunction with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the Maine Forest Service. Students from around the state of Maine will contribute data for the project.Â
I'm a science educator, Maine Guide, and homeschool mother of a 9 year old son. We live in Surry, and the research group would meet 4 times in February either at my house or a community center.Â
One meeting would be collecting data in the field. The other meetings will consist of learning how to identify the insect harming the hemlock trees, identifying the hemlock trees, and sharing the collected data.
The cost is $50-75 (sliding scale) for the 4 week program, Â and a small snack will be included each meeting!
The 4 meeting dates and times are from 9-11 am Monday's Feb 6, Feb, 13, Feb 20, and Feb 27. If there is a snowstorm or other weather issue, we'll have a makeup class on March 6.Â
